Miss Snowden - 1st Grade

The first grade recently enjoyed a double field trip! Students dropped by the Belle Meade Post Office for an extra-special, behind the scenes tour and also mailed friendly letters to one of their classmates. We then proceeded to Fire Station 17 (on West End Blvd.) for yet another memorable tour! This experience correlated with our study of community, as well as the importance of relationships and having a sense of belonging. First graders have also created their own personal time lines and are currently designing maps of their neighborhoods.

Both classes are discovering that math is all around us and that numbers help give order to our world. We are currently investigating the tools that are used to tell time including the analog clock, stopwatch, watch and calendar. Students are also learning to tell time to the hour, count collections of coins, as well as play many different games that help them implement and practice what has been learned.

No aftercare on Tuesday, November 25^th after the Thanksgiving program. Please read carefully about dismissal.

*On November 25, PreK parents should arrive at 11:30 to pick up your child in the classroom and proceed to Fellowship Hall for the meal. Be sure to sign out your PreK child when you come to the classroom. A musical performance by the Kindergarten and First Grade will follow the meal. You may pick up your child's belongings from the classroom as you leave.

"Becoming a Sense Scientist"

What fantastic group of kindergarteners! Our class will continue to explore the discovery process as we learn about the "5 Senses" during the next two weeks. What happens when we mix the primary colors? The wonderful book, Mouse Paint, will kick off our color explorations. Our "Sense"Scientists" will put on their goggles and use eye droppers and food coloring to make secondary colors. We'll also be exploring Braille and make edible Braille names.
Please go to www.afb.org and click on the Braille Bug. Fill out the form and order a Braille Bug alphabet card for your child.
Next week, we'll be creating our own musical instruments from items around the house like boxes, cans, jars, rubber bands, sticks, etc., so please start a collection of things that your child can use at home.

UPPER SCHOOL ENGLISH - The students have been comparing and contrasting objects for writing assignments, and viewing their surroundings from different perspectives. The 5th graders finished their first novel and wrote a final report about the conflicts and themes. The 6th graders completed their study of Greek myths by drawing a mythological character and describing the character in a paragraph. We have also been reading news articles about the Presidential campaign and writing about the election process. The Book Fair and Book Character Day were festive celebrations to end our busy month.

This year in the Computer Lab we will be reviewing some of the key aspects of technology we learned last year and begin talking more extensively about parts of the computer, and how to use the Internet as a source for research and information. As students begin to explore using the internet more extensively, we will be talking about Internet Safety; a subject that will be a central theme to all that we learn this year. Parents, please take time to talk with your children about the 3 steps they should take when they see something inappropriate on the web. Also, be sure to check out the school website at www.thecovenantschool.com on a regular basis.

We have been continuing our tour of the different sections of our library this past month. We have made it through these sections so far: Easy, Readers, Fiction, and the 000's of the Dewey Decimal System...yes, that's right, the good old Dewey Decimal System! My goal in doing this was to encourage the students to browse and check out books from everywhere in the library...and it's working! Students are excited about checking out these "new finds" even though they've been on the shelves all along! One reminder - library notices will be coming home in folders soon. Listed on these notices are books that your child has had checked out for a while. Please take the time to help your child find these books and return them to school. Thank you!

Beginning of the Year Parent Letter.doc Celebrate Hispanic Heritage month by attending a puppet production in Spanish! Edmonson Pike Public Library presents Tomás y la Señora de la Biblioteca Tomas and the Library Lady This Puppet Show will be conducted in Spanish by volunteers from the Nashville Main Library on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at 3pm. It will be a great experience for your children if you can attend! The show is based on Tomas Rivera, a boy from a family of a migrant workers, and the librarian who changed his life by introducing him to the joy of reading books. Running time: 25 minutes For more information call: 614-880-3957 ext. 232 Additionally, the Nashville Public Library presents stories in English and Spanish once a month. Check out their website for locations and times. Search for Bilingual Story Time. The next Bilingual Story Time @ Edmonson Pike Branch Library is Saturday, October 11 @ 11am. I attended last Saturday and enjoyed listening to children's books read in both Spanish and English. The Bilingual Story Time is a great opportunity for your children to hear the Spanish language and understand what is being said through pictures and listening to both languages! This event is most appropriate for children in grades Pre-K-2nd.

November is a busy time as the Kindergarten and first grades prepare for the annual Thanksgiving program. This year the Kindergarten will present a short program, "The Praise Parade", which includes songs they have learned to show why and how we praise God. "The Eagle and the Turkey", will be performed by the first grade. It is a Thanksgiving folk tale of how the Eagle became our National Emblem and the Turkey became the traditional fowl served at dinner. Our present 4th graders presented " The Eagle and the Turkey" when they were in the 1st grade. They are pleased and excited to see this years ’ first graders perform.

The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades are working on this years Christmas Program. The 5th and 6th graders will go to the symphony in November. The series is called, "Licks, Riffs, and Picks” and will revolve around the guitar. The Pre-K students are learning about percussion instruments, loud and soft sounds, and songs of the season.

The kindergarten is finishing the book of Genesis and beginning to
learn about the Israelites exodus from Egypt and wanderings in the
desert.

The first graders are learning about Jacob and his children. We are
about to study the life of Joseph.

Second graders are wrapping up the life of Solomon and learning about
the divided kingdoms of Judah and Israel.

Third graders have learned about the early life and ministry of Jesus
and are currently learning about his teachings and miracles.

Fourth graders are learning about Jacob's family.

Fifth graders are learning about the rule of King David.

Sixth graders just finished two weeks learning about The Beatitudes
and are still learning about the Sermon on the Mount.

Mrs. Thompson - Art

This month our young artists gathered leaves from TCS’s lovely campus and dried them. Using the book Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert as our inspiration, students arranged their leaves to create a picture. Monet’s bridge, a puppy and a lady’s make-up table are just a few of the imaginative ideas students used for this project.

One of our favorite projects this month was the woodworking unit. Students drilled, nailed, sawed and used screws to create their wooden inventions. We learned names and proper use of the woodworking tools used for this project. Look for photos of our young carpenters at work in the hallways.

Our fourth graders are finishing their stuffed Caribbean fish made from butcher paper and brightly painted with tempera paint. They will soon adorn the hallways, joining younger students renditions of coral reef life.

Our fifth and sixth grade artists are in the process of making paper mache Caribbean fish which will hang from the ceilings. Matisse was our inspiration artist and the book National Audubon Society Field Guide to Tropical Marine Fishes was the main reference book used for this project.

Mr. Jordan - 5th and 6th Grades

This week has been a good week for our students. We finally got out to the field and played a little. It's nice to have somewhere to kick around a bit. We have revamped our Radnor projects based on conversations with students that wanted the projects to represent the care for our environment that we seek to obtain. The students have challenged themselves to create a "documentary" film, a photography journal, and a web-based educational site that all seek to educate others on the diversity of Radnor Lake. They have been assigned "jobs" within their groups with leaders that will work with me to delegate their responsibilities. This will mean due dates on specific parts of the projects will be set, with my approval and oversight, by the students. Students will continue to work on this through the rest of this semester. Students will have project work most nights. Take a look at what they are doing and I think you will enjoy this journey.

This weekend may be be the end of our peak fall foliage. Get out there and enjoy its beauty. One of my favorite things about middle Tennessee!

Field trips—that’s the word for 4th grade this past month. To enhance our study of Tennessee history, we went to the Belle Meade Plantation, the Tennessee State Capitol and Museum, and Old Stone Fort Battlefield in Murfreesboro. At Belle Meade we learned about the Harding and Jackson family and horse racing. On our visit to the state capitol we saw where our elected officials meet to make laws. In the museum, we viewed artifacts from the past 200 years of our state and locked our teacher in the stocks! Our favorite trip was to Old Stone Fort where we learned to fire cannons! What an adventurous month in fourth grade!

The third graders continue their learning in the month of November. We will continue to study our multiplication facts. Please take time to study them nightly. We are also moving onto place value in whole numbers and decimals. In reading, we will begin reading Ramona Quimby, Age 8 towards the end of the month. We are also continuing to learn about nouns, specifically singular and plural nouns and possessive nouns. We will begin to study landforms and bodies of water in social studies. In writing, we are continuing to develop our skills as writers. It’s another busy month in third grade!

I have enjoyed getting to know each one of my wonderful students and the parents as well! I am very blessed to be a part of the TCS family. I can tell that this is a place filled with high expectation and love for the whole development of each student.
We have been so busy the month of October and the first few weeks in November! We had the best time dressing up for book character day! We also enjoyed our field trip to the Nashville Zoo. We have been busy writing. We just finished our unit on Poetry, where we learned how to see things through a poets eyes. We just finished the short novel, Molly's Pilgrim. This was a sweet story about a little girl spending her first Thanksgiving in the new world. We are looking forward to the Thanksgiving Program and our Thanksgiving break to spend with our friends and families.
